Ownership and control: blog task

1  ) Why did Facebook buy Instagram for $1bn? the reason Facebook purchased Instagram is to have wider audience. the people using Instagram would also use Facebook.the revenue from Instagram would come back too zuckerberg thus leading too an increase in total revenue. another reason would be too decrease competition. 2) What are the benefits for media companies of vertical integr ation? decreased cost of production thus more profit  profit == revenue - total cost of production  3) What are the benefits for media companies of horizonta l integration? wider range of audience thus more profit, decreases risk because if on business looses interest of consumers then there are multiple paths of income. 4) What is a subsidiary? a smaller company owned by a larger one. 5) Give three examples of media companies that have used synergy to maximise the profit from a brand (there is one above to help you). Audience Effects Theory

The definition of a passive audience is a audience that is a exposed to the media and does not actively engage  The definition of a active audience is a audience that  is engaging, interpreting, and responding to media messages and are able to question the message   hypodermic needle  theory is the theory that the media injects information into the minds of people and they will believe it  INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: blue plant is a example of this because the main reason for watching it is too learn about  ocean life  PERSONAL IDENTITY: Instagram  is a example of this because the purpose   of it is too see the lives of others and so naturally  people will form connections  with other people  DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: video games are an amazing example of this because people live sad, boring and pitiful lives and so they use video games as a form of escapism  and too give themselves  a sense of accomplishment   RELATIONSHIPS: 5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a  par

Blog feedback and learner response

WWW: It’s great that your blog is set up but now we need to make sure we are fully completing work and posting it to our blog. I think this is a useful early lesson in the step-up to GCSE and the amount of work and time you need to dedicate to your classwork and homework.    EBI: Currently, you have two pieces of work unfinished– the introductory questions and denotation and connotation – and one missing. The first priority is to make sure the following is completed and posted to your  Reflect on your first month of Media. What do you feel is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?   The skills I need too develop through the media corse is my denotation and connotation along with my analysis skills  My strongest pice of work at the moment would be the advert analysis.

Camera movement and editing

At 1:35 there is hand held camera movement to mimic the perspective of one of the police officers and add a sense of realism to the intense scene. In my opinion they used the hand held camera movement and the close up shot to build up the tension for the chase scene.  At 1:32 they  cut in between the protagonist and the and the police officer multiple times to build up the tension for the coming chase scene. This makes the passing fast  At 2:52 the protagonist is shot from a low angle to make him seem more powerful.  Once again they cut from the police and the protagonist multiple times at 0:53 to show that he has be caught and build some tension At 0:57 there is a pan shot to follow the movement of the protagonist as he runs away from the police and in my opinion they used this type of camera movement to show the desperation of the protagonist At 1:23 they shot the protagonist and the police at a low angle to show that both groups are powerful individuals  At 3:35 they used a wide sh

media assessment response

WWW-this is a solid first assessment in media with clear potential to go higher well done! EBI-avoid using bullet points for higher mark questions. develop strong P-E-E paragraphs that explore the the question/text in depth  -revise terminology/read the question carefully  -avoid repetition 1Q:0  Q2:1 Q3:4 Q4:2 Q5:1 Q6:4 One of my stronger questions was question 6 "why might charities use pictures of children in their advertising?" in my opinion I did  better in this question because the question was all about connotation  and analysis however I didn't  write to much about analysis. one of my weaker questions was question 3 I should've used more denotation and connotation.  5) the main colour theme of red has connotations of excitement and romance this has the effect of giving the viewer a positive impression on top of this the producers have put the actor in a revealing dress which adds more appeal too the product.

reception theory

  1) What is the preferred reading of a media text? When the audience responds to the ideas in the way the media producer wants them to . 2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text? The audience reject the messages that are trying to .  be conveyed and do not accept/agree with them .  3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film? in the harry brown trailer the young people are portrayed as degenerate and almost psychotic. My evidence for this is the constant showing of young people committing crimes involving violence and gangs. it also can be inferred that these young people come from single parent house holds or from abusive back rounds. this advert feeds into todays common stereotype of the young generation of people. 4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer? Young people will most commonly disagree with this viewing because the advert portrays the young a
