reception theory

 Harry Brown | Viennale

1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?

When the audience responds to the ideas in the way the media producer wants them to.

2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?

The audience reject the messages that are trying tobe conveyed and do not accept/agree with them

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?

in the harry brown trailer the young people are portrayed as degenerate and almost psychotic. My evidence for this is the constant showing of young people committing crimes involving violence and gangs. it also can be inferred that these young people come from single parent house holds or from abusive back rounds. this advert feeds into todays common stereotype of the young generation of people.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?

Young people will most commonly disagree with this viewing because the advert portrays the young audience in a negative light. it also shows them as 1 dimensional or stereotypical way. Furthermore

5) some people will have a preferred reading which would be too want too buy one. This would occur because of the way the Big Mac is shown in the advert. In the advert the Big Mac is shown better than it actually is.  in addition to this advert would appeal to the mainstream psychographic. On the other hand some people would take a oppositional reading because of the way the Big Mac is shown as better than it actually is and not buy the product another reason why people might take a oppositional reading is because it simply doesn’t appeal too them due too life style (or for the fact that it isn’t healthy for you) finally some people will take a negotiated reading because they are  stuck in choice either to buy the product or not
