Blog tasks: Daily Mirror case study

1) Write the definition of the following key language for newspaper front pages (you may want to add an example for each from our Daily Mirror CSP):

Masthead:
Pug: something to grab readers attention and show what comes later in the news paper
Splash Head:
Slogan: shows the companies ideas and what they stand for--> "fighting for you" 
Dateline: day it was published
Byline: mentions the writer who wrote the article
Standfirst: first part of the paragraph is in bold. 



2) What is the main story on the CSP edition of the Daily Mirror (see above)? Make sure you learn the headline and what the story is about.

the main story in the CSP is about Lineker returning to the BBC and it is accompanied by the headline: "Back of the net"

3) What is the 'pug' or smaller celebrity story on the front cover? Why might it appeal to Daily Mirror readers?

it is about coronation street which is a popular drama TV show. This is likely to appeal to the readers as it is likely that most of the people reading the daily mirror also watch coronation street and they would want to learn about the drama surrounding their favourite actors.


4) How are the Conservative Party represented in the Daily Mirror? Again, provide evidence from the CSP pages to support your answers.  

The Tories who are associated with the conservative party have photos on the news paper that don't make them look glamorous and is placed right next to the text that says; "star return to tv...& infuriate Tories" which is placed there to infer that they've been defeated by Lineker who the daily mirror support.


5) What is the balance on the Daily Mirror front page between images, headlines and text?

the text on the front page is balanced by the main image of Lineker. the head line is in a considerably bigger font than the rest of the writing which allows it to be balanced by the image

Representations

1) What political party does the Daily Mirror support? Is there any evidence to support this in the CSP pages we have studied?

the daily mirror supports the labour party, their slogan: "fighting for you" shows this  


2) How does the Daily Mirror represent Gary Lineker in the CSP pages? Why do you think they present him in this way?

the daily mirror represents Lineker as victorious over the BBC. this is supported by the image they chose of him smiling which also shows that he's confident and not stressed by the situation that he's in. Furthermore, they use the word "star" when talking about Lineker. which shows their support for him.

3) How is the BBC Chairman Richard Sharp represented in the Daily Mirror CSP pages? Look particularly at the use of images on the front cover and the section on Sharp on the inside page. Give detailed answers with evidence from the CSP page

the chair man is represented as a villain of sorts. furthermore, the Daily mirror uses a photo of him with a straight face looking away. making him look like an unapproachable character which is contrasted by the photos of Lineker where he is smiling and looking at the camera.

4) How are the Conservative Party represented in the Daily Mirror? Again, provide evidence from the CSP pages to support your answers.

the conservative party are shown being defeated my Lineker. They mention that Lineker may return to the BBC despite what they would've preferred. As a result delivers a message to the audience that the rich conservatives with loads of power can be defeated by Lineker, a single person.

5) Read the main articles on the inside pages. How are different people, groups and organisations represented in the Daily Mirror? Does this reinforce or subvert the stereotypes we usually see in the media?
