Galaxy 'Chauffeur' advert: blog tasks

 1) What key conventions of TV advertising can you find in the Galaxy advert?

props, setting,narrative

2) What is the key message the Galaxy advert is communicating about its chocolate? The slogan for the advert will help you with this question.

the key message of the advert  is that their chocolate is a classy treat. they show this with Audrey Hepburn being in the back of a luxury car driving past an amazing Italian cost line.

3) Who is Audrey Hepburn and why did Galaxy select Audrey Hepburn for this advert?

Audrey Hepburn was a classic 1950 Hollywood star who was a fashion icon. The reason why Galaxy used Audrey Hepburn is because they wanted to have a classic 1950s feel in their advert to which any older viewers will have a sense of nostalgia when seeing it.

4) What is intertextuality?

when one media product references another

5) What Audrey Hepburn films are suggested in this advert and how is this effect created (e.g. mise-en-scene - CLAMPS: costume, lighting, actors, make-up, props, setting)?

the film most referenced was Roman holiday to which the CGI version of Audrey Hepburn looks very similar to in terms of make up. also in the movie Audrey Hepburn is being driven to places just like the advert.

6) Which of Propp's character types are can be found in the advert and how do they change? (Note: just choose two or three character types that are definitely used in the advert - it does not use all seven).

in the advert you can see. the hero, the helper, the donor and in the advert originally there is a male hero who comes to give Audrey a ride of the bus and in this setting she is the classic women in need. after this she comes off the bus and takes the bus drivers hat this is when he becomes the donor. after this she places the hat on the hero and gets in the back of the car. this is when Audrey becomes the hero and he becomes the helper. subverting stereotypes by making Audrey the hero.

7) How does the advert's narrative (story) follow Todorov's theory of equilibrium?

at first the bus is stopped and there is a disturbance from the balance. a bit later a person come to give Audrey a ride, trying to fix the imbalance after this she gets in the back and they drive away whilst Audrey eats Galaxy chocolate.
there is a balance then there is an imbalance and eventually it is resolved and a new balance is brought about.

8) What representation of celebrity can be found in this advert? Think about how Audrey Hepburn is presented.

Audrey Hepburn is first presented as a women in need of help which reinforces the stereotype that women are in need of help from a man. once Audrey gets in the back of the car she is presented as the female hero. she is also made to look like a fashion icon.

9) What representations of gender can you find in this advert?
