the OMO advert  was produced in the year 1955.

women in the 1950s were represented as wholly housewives who should be happy when doing there job. an example of this the OMO advert, where the central image is a women doing laundry and wearing makeup which is very stereotypical and gives an expectation of what women should look like and how they should act.

3) How does the heading message ('OMO makes whites bright') and the style of the text promote the product?

the style of writing promotes the product because it looks like breaking news announcing something important.

4) Analyse the mise-en-scene in the advert (CLAMPS): how is costume, make-up and placement of the model used to suggest women's role in society?

the makeup of the actor is a classic 1950s style. and the actors facial is expession is quite excited which tells the audience that women should be washing the laundry and should be happy doing it.

so the costumers can recognise the product at a store

6) What are the connotations of the chosen colours in this advert - red, white and blue?

red, white and blue are the same colours as the British flag and portrays a sort of national pride is the advert.

the anchorage text is made like a story and its of a child telling their mum about OMO and how good it is. they use language such as "this'll shake you mother!"

8) What representation of women can be found in this OMO advert? Make specific reference to the advert and discuss stereotypes.

women are represented as house wives and cleaners who should love their job as such. furthermore, an expectation of wearinf makeup is also placed on women this happens because the women in the OMO advert is also wearing makeup and has a excited expression on her face,also the red, white and blue colour scheme portray a sort of nationalist pride in cleaning.

9) What is the preferred reading for this advert - what did the producers of the advert want the audience to think in 1955?

the preferred reading for this advert would be the viewer wanting to buy the product as well as agreeing with the idea that women should be house wives and cleaners.

10) What is the oppositional reading for this advert - how might a modern audience respond to this text and the representation of women here?

an Oppositional reading would be the viewer getting offended and thinking that OMO is sexist and the viewer wouldn't want to buy the product  and even negatively speak of the product because of its sexist nature.
